Church to Home?

This past Sunday I attended the annual Heritage House Tour here in Vancouver. It was a lovely, fun-filled day packed with inspiring homes. One of my favorites was an old church re-purposed into a single-family residence. You can follow some before/after photos on the owner’s blog: So you think you’d like to live in a church. The most inspiring spaces were the bathroom and kitchen, which sadly, aren’t pictured. We weren’t allowed to photograph inside any of the homes, so the pictures on their blog will have to do.

There was another church-turned-residence on the tour that I absolutely loved. It is a beautiful example of how to utilize a large space, and update a historic building with modern finishes. You can read more about the Fraser Church in the Vancouver Sun article: A house of worship becomes a home.

As my husband has his degree in philosophy and religion, with my interests in historic renovation, an old church could become a perfect house for us someday. We will keep our options open. This is a good reminder that the less obvious choice for a house could become the most welcoming home with some TLC and an open mind.
